I live in Philadelphia and make things with clay, paper, and ink. I love a patina, a process, and a repeated pattern and walk in cemeteries for inspiration.
My love for artmaking started in elementary school. I loved my art teacher and the time to be creative. My friends and I would sing a song about the excitement of art class day in the schoolyard. I give special thanks to my mother for taking me to art classes every weekend and my sister for the gift of an artist’s quality colored pencil set. Growing up where Crayola crayons were made, I was totally fascinated with their colors and their names - Cornflower Blue, Midnight Blue, Periwinkle, Chartreuse. My love of color came into focus. I was allowed to skip color theory at Connecticut College where I received my BA in Studio Art.
I received my MFA in printmaking at the University of Washington and didn’t get my hands in clay until about a decade later when I took a class in handmade tiles and mosaics at a local art center. I found I loved adding underglaze to stamped and carved texture and removing the top layer of color; it was similar to the etching and collagraph process I had mastered. I have been working on functional pottery as well, with a particular interest in bowls to hold my handmade soups. I love the idea of making a one of a kind handmade item for you that’s both useful and unique - a special tray for a dinner party or a hand-stamped card to show someone you are thinking of them.
